The day was about mid way through and the girl sat in the stuffy class room doodling on the margins of her math work, she knew all this stuff and the droning of the teacher at the front as he explained to the class how to work out the simple equation was boring her. It was the first official day at the new academy, yes she arrived yesterday but this was the first day of lessons, and so far they offered nothing new or stimulating for the girl. She was stretched out in her chair, her jean encased legs stretched out in front of her and crossed at the ankles as she half heartedly drew little butterfly’s, lady bugs, flowers and just random spirals on her work sheet. Her head with its dark hair, looking black in the poor light of the classroom, pulled back in a high pony tail leant to the side, her torso wrapped in a loose filling grey T, with splashes of colour.
Truth be told her mind wasn’t even on the drawings on the paper, it was on the things she had run from, leaving her home to come here far away from the horror of the last few weeks. Her mind also wandered to the horse she had brought she had only seen him once and he was a high spirited young thing even then. True she could have kept her childhood friend, they had a great connection back when they were still together but she knew this new spirited paint stallion would be better. For training him would push her, it would keep her busy, she had figured that between classes, homework and training him she should be able to work it that she didn’t have time for anything else but sleeping. This she figured was a good thing as she wouldn’t have time to mope and think too much about things.
As her thoughts wandered too her new horse, the drawings on her page began to take the form of vague images of horses, some jumping, some in herds racing across the page, some were just standing and some were rearing in defiance. They were all just silhouettes of the animals, she wasn’t in the mood nor did she have her favoured drawing utensils to draw them in detail. She would be getting her horse today after classes finished she had organised for him to be dropped off this afternoon, they had wanted to do it yesterday when she first arrived but she knew she would be too busy settling in herself to settle in a new horse, so she had fought with them to put it off for another day.
“Rayne! Since you think you don’t need to pay attention you can solve the next problem.”
The teacher sneered at the front of the class, you know like all teachers do when they think they can humiliate you in front of the class because you don’t seem to be paying them any attention. Anyway Rayne looked up from her doodling and looked at the equation he had written on the board it was pretty straight forward, ‘find m if 5 (m + 3) + 2 (3 - 2m) = 36’, yes pretty straight forward and boring. After a quick glance Rayne went back to doodling.
“M is 15”
She answered without even thinking about it too much she had done these plenty of times before, it was pretty easy for her to quickly work out the mathematics of it in her head, even as she drew her random pictures over her lined paper which they were supposed to do their working out. Without looking us she heard his slight hmmph he made not too impressed at finding a student that didn’t quake at being caught not paying attention and further more her actually knowing the answer. After a false start with lots of umms from the teacher as he tried to re focus on his talk he launched back into his dull droning explaining how the equation she had just answered so easily was worked out step by step taking 5 minutes explaining what she worked out in half a minute.
Her small backpack, sat leaning against her chair and her phone was nestled in her pocket, as she sat zoning out again she felt the small phone vibrate once in her pocket, text, she thought to herself, if it had been a call it would have keep vibrating with annoying persistence. She ignored it for now she didn’t feel like losing her phone on the first day and she knew even after this first class with this teacher he was one that would take it off her if she whipped it out, even sitting in the back row as she was in the far corner she had a feeling he would catch her, cause even as she doodled on the paper she could feel his eyes flicking back to her often.
It was obvious he wanted to tell her off for not paying attention but what could he do when she obviously knew the material? She wasn’t too fazed though and it showed in her vivid blue eyes, and in her relaxed posture, if she was worried what the teachers thought she would have been sitting up straight in her chair, probably sitting in the front row with her eyes focused intently on the teacher, like the girl at the front obviously the teachers pet, but she wasn’t.

The morning light scattered in through the broken blinds in Math class. As the day bore on, Dale sighed as he looked out the windows at the perpetual blue sky, wishing that he was anywhere else but there.
A book, full of more scribbles and drawings than actual alphanumeric characters lay open in front of him; his teeth chewing absently on the tip of a pencil as he tried to concentrate on the paragraph’s.
Today’s lesson was about... he wasn't sure. Something about numbers and letter's; that much he had picked up on, but he really couldn’t concentrate on the lecture at all. As per usual, his mind was fluttering around the thin clouds that were slowly drifting across the blue sky outside, beyond the broken blind’s casting crooked shadow’s across the opposite wall, like bar’s you’d find in a jail cell.
The teacher (who’s name Dale had neglected to remember), was reciting the paragraph’s on the page, whilst drawing little diagram’s on the board in front of the room. Dale hated it when teachers rambled on, expecting you to know everything about the lesson, before you’ve even learnt anything about the topic.
So instead, Dale kept himself preoccupied by picking at a loose thread on his jacket sleeve. It was probably one of his favorites out of his vast collection of androgynous apparel. Today, Dale was wearing his favorite black drain-pipe pants with white spots, as well as black boots - with a slight heel to give him the appearance of being a little taller than he was - a white, magenta, and black diamonte David Bowie shirt underneath a black leather jacket, unzipped covered his torso.
He was still drifting around in his little dream-bubble when he the teacher’s voice snapped through the daydream, causing Dale’s head to lift sharply as he scolded a young woman that had been sitting beside him. Apparently she hadn't been listening, but Dale disagreed, her answer to the teacher's question was completely right and in a seemingly unfamiliar language to him. And he watched, head remaining low, trying to disguise his eavesdropping as she went back to whatever it was she had been doing. He peered a little closer at her work, and realised that she was more or less doing the same as he was. The hand on the clock idly crept past, it’s ticks reverberating off the walls and leaving acres of silence at the short second interludes. Dale had been listening to them for so long that the ticks were now just background noise, the foreground was his breathing, slow gasping on the off-beat. "'E sounds like he has a pretty large pole up his rear or sommfink don' ya recon?" Dale spoke with his London cockney lilt, making sure to keep his voice just above a whisper, so as not to draw attention from the teacher as he addressed the girl beside him. Then he hastily added, "I wasn' copying offa you by the way," just as he scrawled down one of her answers.STATUS ;; COMPLETED\ TAGS ;; DALE, RAYNE

The girl absently blew the bangs from where they had settled in her eyes, she needed to get a hair cut soon, it was getting beyond a joke, annoyed when blowing at them didn’t work she reached up and brushed them out of her way before returning to her random scribbling’s, she already had written down the answers to the entire section which was supposed to take the whole week to complete. If she had gone at the pace the teacher was going it would have but she had just raced ahead as soon as she sat down and finished the section in the first 10 minutes of the lesson, so for the remainder of it she had just been entertaining herself by drawing all around the answers.
She hadn’t paid much attention to the other teens in the class, she wasn’t in much of a mood for socialising, she half wished her best friend from back home was here, usually they worked as a tag team in classes. You see Rayne was a math wiz, Cassandra was a science wiz, and they both excelled in computing, so Rayne used to help Cassandra in math, Cassandra used to help Rayne in Science and they both used to do one half of the computer work and email their half to the other. Now for any slow people out their that resulted in a lot more free time, because even with math and science neither girl was bad at it as such it just took one of them a little longer to grasp things but by helping each other out they both finished quickly in all their classes, as for English they were both very individual at that and both very good at it.
Rayne already missed her best friend but she knew it wasn’t much good dwelling on it though it was easier to dwell on that then other things, she was snapped from her thoughts by a whispering she realised was directed at her. She barely glanced sideways at the small guy next to her, even sitting down she could tell she was taller then him, he was dressed pretty well for a guy and she could see that he had scribbling on his page too though there were a lot less answers on his page then on hers.
"'E sounds like he has a pretty large pole up his rear or sommfink don' ya recon?"
She heard him whisper with a cockney lilt, the corners of her lips pulled up in a smile at his comment and a little at his cockney lilt as well. They didn’t have people who spoke like that in Gingin her old home town and as with most things new things were entertaining at times as long as they weren’t frightening, she had to suppress a laugh as he hastily added.
"I wasn' copying offa you by the way,"
Especially when she saw him scrawling down one of her answers out of the corner of her eye, she shook her head slightly and had a silent chuckle but stopped when she saw the teacher glance at her and gave him a sickly sweet smile, he soon went back to his boring droning.
“Of course you weren’t, oh that one your trying to read but cant is 67”
She whispered back with a grin on her face, she didn’t mind if people copied from her, hell with this guy teaching she would be surprised is anyone could possibly learn a damn thing without copying.
“I’m Rayne by the way in case you missed that too, and hey if you can read it around all the drawings go for it”
She breathed back as she started a little sketch of a dragon curling itself around the date at the top of the page.

Dale's large blue eyes flicked to his open page, completely bare but for the scribbling's of drawing's all over the borders and first few questions as the brunette commented on his work. He hastily crossed out the 8L that he'd scrawled (he had no idea where that came from) and hastily put a 67 in it's place. "Cheers," He offered her a crooked grin through a curtain of bottle-black hair as he turned his head back slightly towards her. Having long hair helped when it came to trying to be sneaky in class, it also looked genius too! The only fault was that he was often mistaken for a young woman due to his lithe frame and dandyesque dress sense.
Dale was glad for the distraction that his new math neighbor granted, seeing it as a good opportunity to unshackle himself from the boredom of having to sit and endure the boring lecture, and have a decent chat with someone, instead. Even though he'd been at Firefly Fields for a short time now he still did not know many people; the only people he had really gotten familiar with where a funny, and beautiful young woman called Giselle, whom he had met in the stall’s at midnight one Saturday, and another pretty girl called April, who he'd helped unpack her gelding from his horse float. They were probably his most valuable friends at FFA so far.
"Thanks!" He whispered chirpily, chancing a secretive glance at the front of the room before muttering, "This is complete rubbish, if you ask me. Wha' do you say, we scheme a break-out eh? Day’s too genius to spend in this jail cell."
Of course he knew that an actual break-out would be nearly impossible without risking as ass whooping from the principal, but it was a nice thought. As he spoke, the teacher coughed loudly and Dale gave 'Rayne' as she'd just introduced herself as, a cheeky smirk before he began tapping his pen on the open book in front of him, feigning an interest on whatever the teacher was saying. "Oh I'm Dale, and yeah," he peered onto her page again, scrawling down another answer in his own book "it's hard to miss. Very lovely. 'Specially with tha' dragon curled around it, tha's well genius!" He offered her a wink, chewing on the end of his pen.
She was a pretty thing as well, with long brunette hair and saphire blue eyes, it was difficult not to get trapped inside of them. Smart too. And she seemed nice. It would be cool to get to know her a little better he thought, as the teacher's lecture to the class only just reached his ears. Even if he did know what he was doing, like this one obviously did he doubted he'd be paying much interested in the monotonous monologues of that fool up the front.STATUS ;; COMPLETED\ TAGS ;; DALE, RAYNE

The girl smiled and shook her head slightly in amusement as she saw him scribble out his weird interpretation of the answer and replace it with the right one. His chirpy thanks made her smile and shake her head slightly again, he was a happy one she thought as she sat there in the boring class maybe he would be a good one to befriend surely someone that happy would be a good person to hang around with. You never know maybe some of that carefree happiness would rub off on her hadn’t it already, before today she hadn’t so much as smiled since it happened.
His next little half hearted suggestion got her thinking, she knew from his tone he was joking and he wouldn’t seriously do it for fear of getting in trouble but she was already thinking up ways to accomplish just that.
Claim she needed to use the bathroom could work, especially with a male teacher if he went to object all she would have to do is say it was that time of the month and if he didn’t let her go he would have to explain to the cleaners why one of his chairs was covered in blood. Used to work all the time back home, but that wouldn’t do much good for Dale now would it, and she kind of wanted to break him out too. She had a selfish reason for wanting to break the smaller guy out of class, and that was so she didn’t have to face an empty period with nothing to do but think.
Thoughts were still pouring through my head as he spoke again, she didn’t really catch much except his name was Dale she was too busy trying to think up a good escape plan, she came up with a few but they were either way to out there or would only get her out of the class room.
Then it hit her an inspirational idea, well who knew it could backfire totally and they would be in huge trouble for trying but hey if it worked it would be genius. Scribbling on the side of her page she quickly wrote the words, ‘just follow my lead’ made sure he read it before launching her plan into action.
The teacher was writing on the board so his back was turned away from them and she gave Dale a shove she didn’t even have to try hard before the guy was toppling off his chair, the teacher turned with a puzzled look but almost instantly Rayne sprung into action she couldn’t have Dale say too much just yet.
“Oh my goodness! He fainted, don’t worry sir I will take him to the nurse, I will do the section for homework if I have too, Oh my I hope he will be ok I wonder why he fainted!”
She gushed and she grabbed together her school work and his and crammed it all into her back grabbing his as well before she scooped down and pulled him to his feet, half dragging half carrying the guy out the door before the teacher could grasp what had just happened. She kept half dragging half carrying him until they got around the corner and away from the windows, then she let go of him and handed him his bag.
“There we go all broken out, so where should we go, I thought us the hard part you can do the rest.”
She said with a grin turning back to him, the school was deserted with everyone in class as they were supposed to be, and Rayne wasn’t too worried if they did see anyone she could just fake tummy cramps and pretend Dale was helping her to the nurse, after all it wasn’t entirely fair making him the one fainting all the time now was it.

Let's Dance to Joy Devision and celebrate the irony... Amidst the sound of ticking clocks, pens scrawling on paper, the momotonous lecturing from the teacher and his own steady, rhythmic breathing, Dale heard the sound of paper being slid across the desk, towards his open book. He glanced up to see Rayne's hand slide back towards her side of the desk before he slid the small piece of paper closer to his chest, watching the front of the room intently for any signs that the teacher had wised onto what two of his students were doing. After a few second’s, he unfolded it and read the scrawl inside.
Snickering softly, Dale gave Rayne a furtive glance, and a smirk, but there was barely any time to think about scribbling a reply before he felt something solid collide with the side of his rib's and left him sprawling down onto the floor, cracking the side of his head on the carpeted floor, and his legs a tangled mess over the chair he'd only just been sitting on a few moments ago. Genuinely a little dazed, he then felt one of his arms being grabbed and he was pulled rather roughly upwards and half-dragged across the carpet towards the open door of the classroom.
Oh no, no, no, no, not my jeans! C'moooon! His mind-tank protested as he tried to get his legs to cooperate with him and lift himself the rest of the way into an upright possition as they escaped out the classroom and through the glass doors that led out into the open air and freedom. But before he knew it, they were out and he was dropped again, this time on the concrete near a small set of stairs leading towards the grassy ground.
With another "oomph!" he then felt his school bag being trust towards him, knocking him back slightly. There was a brief moment of confusion, mixed with a slight throbbing on the side of own of his temples before realisation began to set in, and he looked up at Rayne with his large blue eyes. "Wha' ya doin'? Ya nearly broke m'nose!" He moaned melodramatically, his voice pitching slightly with irritation as he began to feel the bridge of his nose with his free fingers. "Goodness knows it's already big 'nuff as is. Now lemme up!" Dale reached out his arms like a small child wanting to be picked up, bottom lip pouting. "I wanna go for a swim. Put some cool wa'er on this broken nose of mine."
It was a beautiful outside. It was completely silent save for the two truant students who had only then just narrowly escaped a fate of boredom. The mid-afternoon sun was radiating happily in the brilliant blue sky, the bright green trees were swaying gently in a calm cool breeze, and the green grass was freshly cut on the open lawns. The air was warm and invigorating, and Dale sent his sweet regards to the ghost of winter. Firefly Field's Academy were into their first few day's of Spring, and it was no surprised that most of the students were in the mood to get out and enjoy the fresh air. Sure the little cockney knew that he should probably be working on whatever it was that he had meant to be learning that he'd just keep putting off until it's a week over due, ask for an extention, have said extention regected and a big fat 'F' slapped onto his report card to send back to merry ol' London. But have you been outside? Seriously who wanted to be indoors?Everything is going wrong but we're so happy! STATUS ;; COMPLETED\ TAGS ;; DALE, RAYNE

Ok so maybe she pushed him a little harder then was necessary but at the same time it worked a treat, having him dazed as he was meant that he didn’t scream out a protest and alert the teacher. True once she got them both outside she could have made sure he was steady on his feet before letting him go and thrusting his bag at him, but come on what was he a pansy? Besides she had got them out of the class room right, exactly so she knew he couldn’t be too mad for long.
She almost laughed out loud when he landed on his backside and nearly got toppled over again when she gave him his bag, but the teacher might hear that to she suppressed it a little. When she listened to his little over dramatised tyrant about his so called broken nose she couldn’t help a giggle and offered her hand pulling him to his feet as she spoke.
“my god come on man don’t be a little cockney wimp”
She said her tone was light and joking so she wouldn’t offend, she didn’t want to offend this funny little cockney man, he could prove to be a valuable friend one day. She laughed at his little whinge about wanting to go swimming so he could get some cold water on his ‘broken nose’. Stepping forward now that he was standing she stood right in front of him up close, reached up and squeezed his nose.
“Well my mum was a nurse and I can tell ya it’s not broken, so quite the whinging and lets go swimming”
She said with a grin turning away but not before she tapped him on the shoulder saying ‘tag your it’ before jumping down the short lot of stairs landing at the bottom and taking off in the direction of the lake bag swinging from the one strap she had thrown over her shoulder. Even as she ran toward the lake seeming so carefree and happy there was a nagging at the back of her mind telling her this was wrong, as if something was telling her off for being happy.
After all everyone she loved was dead how could she be here running toward a lake happy and laughing when they would never again be able to do anything remotely happy. She wondered if there was life after death, she would love if her mother could sit up in heaven and watch her grow, and that made her feel guilty. When she was sad and moping she felt guilty for not moving on and being happy so her mother could see she wasn’t hopeless without them here. Then when she was happy or at least pretending to be she felt guilty because she thought about how her mother would never know this joy again, and if she was watching her daughter from heaven or wherever she was would it make her sad to think her daughter didn’t grieve for her.
Even as she ran her step slowed somewhat becoming slightly less exhuberant as she ran, she didn’t want too seem too happy, after all it had been what a week, 2 max since her loved ones died, how heartless of her to be running with a smile on her face so soon after that. True being away from where it happened almost made it feel like she was just at boarding school at times and she could call them any time she wanted but she knew that this wasn’t the case, and it didn’t take long for happy thoughts to turn sour.
Soon she was running hard and fast no longer playful, no longer slowed down slightly, she ran flat out and blindly toward the lake suddenly feeling like running was the answer like she could run from all the things she didn’t want to face.

Let's Dance to Joy Devision and celebrate the irony... Suuuure Dale might've been over reacting a little bit when he'd said that Rayne had broken his nose. Then of course Dale had always been a little over-dramatic. He could remember that there'd been one time where one of his friend's had actually spat in his face and he'd made such a big deal out of he'd told the guy that he had nearly broke his nose and that he'd have to pay to get it fixed if it ever did break. Well, if someone were to hit Dale in the face he was sure that his nose would be the first thing that got smashed.
He'd just always been that sort of person. But he was also naive, and quite caring when he wasn't fussing over his clothes or hair. He was friendly to just about everyone as long as they returned that favor. He loved making a few good friend's, and meeting new people. It was just the way he'd always been.
He would like to be Rayne's friend as well. She seemed the sort of person who needed a good friend too, since she looked fairly new - he was new as well so he guessed that the newb's should stick together. She seemed to have a good sence of humour too, which was refreshing. As she went to help him to his feet, Dale lgrasped onto her hand, at the same time pushing himself upwards so they both didn’t tumble downwards. Luckily, Rayne was pretty strong, and he only tottered slightly as he allowed himself to release his hold on her hand and upright himself properly. "Thanks for tha'," he smiled crookedly at her, picking up his bag and slinging it across his back. "Hey an' I'm no' a cockney wimp," he spoke in mock offence, "I'm a delicate flower." He could see that she'd been joking and that her word's held no hidden malice. He would have picked up on it if they had.
Dale watched, a little irresolutely as Rayne came closer him, hand extended towards his face. For the briefest of moments, he thought that she was going to touch his hair and he felt him tensed a little in expectancy, before it dawned on him that she wanted to touch his nose. When this realization finally dawned on him, Dale pursed his lips together, blinking a few times before crossing his large blue orb's as she squeazed his nose gently, him crinkling his nose under her touch before she let go. He was about to open his mouth to protest her claims before she gave him a light tap on the shoulder, "tag your it!" and making a long jump down the steps and bounding off across the grounds.
You might'nt believe it but Dale was a fairly athletic guy despite his laziness. He'd always been fairly good at running, though he had all the upper body strength of a plastic bag. Mimicing Rayne's jumping action as she'd flung herself down the short lot of step's that represented their leap into freedom, Dale grinned a large grin, showing off to rows of slightly crooked teeth as he took a couple of steps back and leapt down the step's to begin his chase after her.
She had certainly taken the lead and was what seemed like miles ahead of him, but it wasn't taking too long for him to start to close the gap, his bag jumping up and down against his back as his stack-heeled boots made a steady 'thump thump thump' against the grassy lawns. "Ay c'mon Thunderfeet I'm no' tha' fast, wait up!" He called ahead of him, as he ran through the grounds towards the gates, and out towards the footpath's and endless street lamps. The adrenalin keeping him going and the thought of being free from that wretched and boring classroom added to it. He felt the beginning's of a stich in his side but he took a deep breath and concentrated on his feet pounding against the ground. It wouldn't take long now.
*FLASH FORWARD SAY.... 5 MINUTES*
Yeah I know I said that Dale was a fairly athletic guy, but after five minutes of running, Dale was pretty puffed out! Chest heaving slightly from the overexertion and blood pumping fast Dale looked out at the large lake in front of him. It had been at one point in time that Dale had actually finally caught up to Rayne, giving her a hasty tap on the shoulder (nearly tripping over himself as he did so) and quickly overtook her. The Osmond's Lake's water rippled as a gentle breeze caught in Dale's hair, sending strands to blow and float across his pointed face, tickling and caressing his features like light fingers. With an almost breathless laugh, Dale quickly unzipped his jacket, shrugging it off of his shoulders and draping it over a nearby tree. His Bowie shirt came off next, followed by his boots, socks, and then his black spotted pants, leaving him to wade into the water wearing nothing but a pair of dark blue underpants.
He gave a sharp gasp as the water touched his bare skin, hessitating momuntarily before he took in a deep breath and dunked his head under the surface. My hair's gonna be ruined he thought as he came up for air, pushing his ebony fringe from his face with his fingers and giving his head a shake so that the dark strands of hair clinging around the back of his neck wouldn't stick to it. Rivulette's of water trickling from his lithe frame, and dripping from his long nose and pointed chin back into the pool of water, Dale turned his head back towards the shoreline, blue orbs in search of his newest comrade.Everything is going wrong but we're so happy! Rayne had been running flat out but she slowed slightly hearing Dales call, she almost smiled at him calling her thunder feet, it was true she could run fast and she had great stamina but that wasn’t an accident. That was the result of years of training for boxing, there was no point going in a ring to fight if you didn’t have the stamina for it.
It wasn’t long after she slowed her pace that he over took her not that she was worried about it she didn’t mind letting him think he had caught up of his own accord but she wanted to run and run fast for a bit longer and as she saw the lake coming into view she made a decision. Taking off into the brush around the lake she ran through it flat out, dodging tree’s and jumping over small logs, it was good training and it also helped her to clear her head.
As she came to the other side of the lake to where Dale was heading she slowed her pace and moved more cautiously to the edge of the lake, she could see Dale looking the other way searching for her and a grin broke across her features. Quickly stripping off her outer clothes, and pulling off her shoes she waded silently into the water in her black bra and matching underwear, it was cold and she suppressed a gasp as she lowered herself in slowly trying not to give away her position.
She swam some of the way toward him taking slow silent strokes, then when she was almost on him she lowered her head below the water and finished her swim below the water her eyes open under the water she reached out and pinched him on the leg before swimming to the surface, soon bursting out laughing at his reaction and she floated easily on the water.
“What ya looking for over there?”
She said with amusement indicating the direction she should have come from had she not diverted her course after he overtook her, a grin on her face as she bobbed up and down gently in the almost calm water of the lake.

Let's Dance to Joy Devision and celebrate the irony... The water probably wouldn't be as chilly if Dale had been moving around, but standing navel deep in a lake in the first few day's of Spring, you couldn't really blame him for shivering slightly. Gooseflesh rose on his arms and chest, and Dale curled his hand's into tight fists, as if woud do anything to preserve any warmth. His blue orb's, now bright from the cold looked towards the shoreline in search for Rayne. In his vision he could see small children walking along the street, giggling as they sucked on ice-creams and lollies, swinging on their parent's arms. Cars swept down the road with tunes wafting out the open windows and a cat lolled lazily on a mossy wall not too far away. There weren't too many people out today, which surprised him since there weren't too many clouds in the sky and the sun sent warm ray's down to kiss at his pale, gooseflesh ridden skin.
If he were paying attention - which he seldom did - Dale might've heard the slight disturbances in the water as a dark headed figure floated towards him, just under the surface. "Gah!" He gave a high-pitched squeal as he felt something sharp pinch (or bite, he wasn't sure) at the skin just above his knee and staggered back a few paces. In a brief moment of panic he tripped into the broken surface with a loud 'splash!', before he came up for air, coughing up a mouthful of water.
When he surfaced, it was to the grinning face of Rayne. His eyes even wider than usual blinked at her with surprise, his mouth gaped open before he pursed his lips into a wiked smile, taking a deep breath and dunking himself under the water's surface once more. Something scaley rubbed against Dale's thigh as he opened his eyes underneath the water, his vision foggy as he took in the watery world around him. The water was pretty clear, albiet a little darker, and instead of sand, tiny pebbles and stone's covered the bedding of the Lake. Through his choppy fringe, he could see teeny schools of fish darting about in the water a short distance away, and above him he could see the sun's reflection rippling over the surface of the water.
Still grinning an impudent smile, Dale allowed himself to fill his cheeks with a mouthfull of water. Staying under for a briefest moment longer, he then stood up quickly - nearly loosing his footing again - and squirted the mouthful of water at Rayne, aiming for her face. "If ya pinch in the pool," he wagged an index finger at her, "you ge' a bi' a cockney spit 'n your face. So..." he blew a raspberry at her and crossed his arms, tongue going to curl around an incisor in an imputent manner. "There!" And after another deep breath, Dale dove under the water's surface again, taking a few strokes deeper into the dark water, until he was unable to touch the bottom of the lake with his toes. Probably not the best idea, since he'd never been the bestest swimmer in the world, but the game was on! And he ready to have fun.Everything is going wrong but we're so happy! Rayne’s grin was intact as she watched the little cockney’s reaction to getting pinched, not only did he let out a girlish squeal he lost his footing in the shock and fell into the lake with a splash. Rayne was doubled over with laughter when he came to the surface coughing and spluttering. His wide eyed look with mouth agape as he looked up at her was too much, Rayne’s stomach hurt from laughing so hard, she didn’t even notice as Dale ducked under the water taking in a mouthful of water. It was only when she felt the cold water warmed slightly from being inside the little guys mouth hit her face that she realised what he was up to.
Her laughing stopped abruptly and she stood there looking at Dale indignantly as he went on with his little speech. She couldn’t help grinning and laughing when he blew a raspberry at her while saying so there. Who did that these days apart from 3 year olds, she watched as he retreated away toward the middle of the lake more in a few strokes. Rayne was quick to follow suit diving into the depths of the lake she swam underneath him and kept going.
She was right in the middle of the lake when she surfaced more or less, it was somewhere she was comfortable being, and ever since she was young she had loved the water. Thus she had become a good swimmer since she was hardly ever out of it, she could swim for hours if she needed too and often did just for fun.
She heard a women yell out from the street as her young son went to run off toward the lake. “James, come back now, we aren’t going to the lake today! Come away from the edge, you know better then to go near water without me!”
She could remember a time when her own mother used to call out similar things too her and suddenly her playful mood evaporated, the water didn’t seem so inviting anymore, it just seemed cold and empty. Treading water in the middle of the lake she looked blankly at the bank where the young boy had been before he was ushered away by his mother.
Forcing herself too look away she spotted Dale and sent a half hearted splash his way, she knew that if he was paying attention he might notice her sudden change in attitude but she had to try to seem like the happy normal girl it was the only thing that kept her sane, working hard to hide the pain.

Let's Dance to Joy Devision and celebrate the irony... Kicking his legs's and moving his arms in a kind of pushing motion Dale swam (albeit a little slowly) further and further from the familiar safety of the part of the lake where he could feel the bottom with his toes. He noticed a dark figure travel along beneith him as he swam, but knew better this time than to let his imagination run away with him, knowing full well that it must've been Rayne this time. Beside's, he'd seen the long flow of her hair floating about her head as she'd swum by him. As he kicked his legs through the water, a memory began to creep into Dale's simple mind of a time when he was much younger, still living with both his parent's in London.
He could remember there was a small park, not too far from where they had lived. Most of the time, there was hardly anyone there, so Dale often had the swing set to himself. He loved the park; almost every day the huffy little toddler would drag his mother to the playground and sit himself straight onto the little swing set, waiting for her to start pushing. He would shriek with laughter, kicking his legs in an attempt to push himself further as his mother pushed the swings.
After the swing’s, she would take him down to a small duck pond. Keeping Dale back by clutching his coat as he leant right over the pond, sprinkling bread crumbs over the surface of the lake, giggling as each one dived to get more. She had always been fearful that he’d fall in, even if the pond was only maybe, 3 feet deep. If Dale ever fell in, he wouldn’t go very far.
One day, after walking home from the park, Dale suddenly looked over at his mother and grinned cheekily. “Can we go back an’ feed the duckie’s another time?”
“Yes li’l man, and tha’s a promise” Dale fell silent for another minute, before adding,
“When I grow up, I wanna live at the lake.” Dale’s mother started shaking with silent laughter, this was such an innocent little statement to make, she couldn’t help it. Thankfully Dale wasn't looking at her so he didn’t know. That evening, his parents fought terribly, resulting in a plate being thrown across the room, and Dale to fling himself out of the house, straight down to the park.
He sat there for what seemed like an eternity. Luckily, it had been one of the very rare night’s where it wasn’t awfully cold, or rainy so even whilst his heart wrenched as he curled up underneath one of the swing’s in the park, Dale had been able to lay without too much discomfort.
He was unsure of how long he had slept under those swing’s, but when he opened his eyes, he realized that someone had swept him up in their arms, welcoming him in their embrace, and willing all of their energy and heat to transfer into Dale. Running finger’s through his hair, Dale’s mother was almost crying, shushing Dale and rocking him slightly.
“It’s ok now li’l man. There there, sshhhh, it’s going to be okay.” And Dale believed her.
Dale suddenly felt like a rain cloud had taken up residence over his head. ‘Stupid cloud, you’ll get my ‘air wet!’ he though crossly. But then Dale’s solitary brain cell shouted at him to stop with the pining; it was getting too dark in Dale’s mind and his brain cell wanted to read a magazine.
Then, suddenly realizing that he was still under water, Dale’s alertness was brought back to the present as his lungs began compressing, begging for a breath of fresh air. He pushed himself upwards to retreat to the top of the water and break the surface for air. He panted for precious air as he came up, surprisingly to himself not too far from where Rayne had come up. With a loud cough, he lifted a hand to wipe at his nose, where water had decided to trickle out of it. "Blimey you know how to move fast dontchya?" He commented, not noticing at first his new friends sudden change in mood, but when he did his eyes fixed on her, a look of concern crossing his features, brows furrowed behind a flat fringe - his jet-black hair now lying flat against his head. What could have possibly changed her mood so suddenly? His eye flicked towards the direction that she was facing to spy upon a woman rushing after her son as he tried to make his way towards the lake. For a moment he almost thought that the kid would make it, before his mother snatched his hand and admonished him for his lack of listening skills.
Again, it reminded Dale of his own mother.
It was then that Dale felt yet another splash in his direction, this time bracing himself with a hand as the spray of water hit him. Dale turned his attention back towards her then, and his facial expression changed in an instant. A huge, genuine smile was suddenly on his face, his eyes were glittering with pleasure, not worry. Every muscle in his body seemed to relax. It was quite the transformation – Dale had conveyed without words the worry he'd felt before Rayne had noticed. Now he was smiling again, all traces of his previous mood vanished. Yet his new behaviour wasn’t fake, not at all. It just seemed that Dale had perfected the art of changing moods in an instant to suit his purpose. There was no doubt that Dale was genuinely happy right now, but that after thought that something might've been wrong with Rayne's mood still nagged in a small part of his brain and he made a decision to try and make thing's a little better.
"Wanna race?" He asked, kicking his legs a little harder to keep himself above the water. "Firs' one to that" he pointed one hand out towards a small stick floating in the water about 30 meters from them, "win's, and the las' one has to carry the other back to the acad'my. Deal?" Then, without waiting for an answer, Dale sprung into action, taking a head start as he dove into the water once again, creating a splash as he went under and began kicking his limb's towards the direction of the stick.Everything is going wrong but we're so happy! So she wasn’t paying all that much attention to anything, just treading water half heartedly staying above the water looking blankly about herself, even with her mood at the moment she couldn’t resist a semi genuine smile as she saw Dale’s features break into a genuine grin full of enthusiasm. It was like it was physically impossible to be unhappy around him, he was like a little puppy. Show even the most half-hearted attempt at being happy and he responded with mountains of enthusiasm.
It took her a moment after he took off to realise what he was up to. It took her a second after realising this to take off after him, and although he was a pretty good runner he wasn’t as strong at swimming and as she reached out with strong strokes she soon overtook him. Even as she swam she wasn’t sure what they were racing too, but then she saw the puny stick in the water, the only possible thing he could have meant and almost stopped swimming to laugh her head off.
What a fun thing to pick, the tiny stick was bobbing around in the water drifting away from them as they swam toward it. Picked up by the gentle natural current and the stronger one created by their swimming towards it. Regardless it didn’t take Rayne long to cover the 30meter distance and she soon caught up with the little stick and grabbed it holding it up in victory.
She waited until Dale was almost there before hurling it over the top of his head in the direction they had just come from. With a grin she duck dove under the water and swam under him surfacing a fair distance from where she went down she swam after it again, just enjoying the swim, even if she did seem like a dog chasing a stick, at least it gave her something to swim too.
All too soon she caught up with the stick again by which time she was near the shore, deciding she should check the time since her horse was arriving this afternoon she waded out of the water and strolled up the shore from where she entered going into the woods she retrieved her bag and began walking around the shore to where Dale had dumped his things.
Pulling out her phone as she walked, she checked the time and realised she would have to head back very shortly to meet the truck which would bring her new horse to the school. She also had missed calls from her friends back home but she just entered out of them not really wanting to talk to them right at that moment. She wasn’t thinking all that much and was still wandering around the lake in just her underwear, her jeans and shirt stuffed in her bag.
“I don’t know about you Dale darlin’ but I’m going to need to head out soon, I need to go meet my new horse, he should be arriving in an hour.”
She called out as she walked around the lake flopping down on the grass near Dale’s bag she rummaged through her bag and pulled her shirt out pulling it over her head within seconds it was damp.

Let's Dance to Joy Devision and celebrate the irony... Dale felt the cool burst of water surround his bodice as he'd doven into the water, bubbles rushing past him as he went under. He kicked his legs and swung his arms in an outward circle motion as he swam in the direction of the stick, unsure if Rayne was now ahead of or behind him as he swam. He could feel a dull ache in his arms as he propelled himself along (albiet a little sluggishly) but chose to ignore it, he was far more interested in beating Rayne in a little water race than pay attention to his own arms - though mind you they were looking pretty genius today.
His legs were starting to ache as well, while he pushed himself through the dark water. Maaaaybe it would have been a good idea to have a propper breakfast this morning. Well 'propper' by the defininition that his mother might've used were she here - "You need proper food, Dale. Rice. Pasta. That sort of thing. Food which has never seen sugar before in its life!" Instead Dale had eaten a large handful of gummybears dipped in nutella. As another pre-start of school snack he had eaten pizza crust - no pizza - just a couple of crusts off of a couple of small slices he'd helped himself to the night previously.
Soooo not an iron man's breakfast thats for sure.
Finally he surfaced, roughly where he'd thought that the stick would have been, only to have to spin around to see it at least 10 meter's behind him now. Surely he wasn't that fast. Well, he could have been. He was all that and a bag of chips after all. He was about to savor his victory when he glanced up at the shore and found that Rayne was currently gathering her thing's by the shore of the lake.
Way to burst a bubble, Rayne.
It surprised him though that she hadn't put her clothing back on yet, still wandering the edge of the lake in her underwear and bra. Dale himself had never had allot of shame. There had been one time a few months back that he'd actually gone out to a friends place wearing one of his mothers dresses (on top of a pair of drainpipe jeans, he'd reason). He had come hime fairly late that night as well, and since the house had been locked, Dale had tried to climb throuigh the window, subsiquently getting stuck half way. A friend of his, Sandy, had begun spanking his behind in an attempt to dislodge him (he also had the sneaking suspition that she'd enjoyed doing it as well). After a few moments and about a handful of cusses and curses, Dale had been dislodged only to be faced with the irritance of his mother standing over him in the bathroom. She had made them all cheese on toast afterwards though so it was all good though.
He heard her calling something out to him as she pulled her previously discarded shirt over her head, though he couldn't quite hear exactly what she was saying. Something about heads, or horses... and hours? Huh? o.O
He floated there for a few seconds after that, shrugging and shaking his head in an exadurated fashion, hoping that she would take it in a "Sorry! Can' really hear ya!" way, instead of thinking that he didn't really mind what she did. Actually, being out there alone now wasn't as much fun at all now that Rayne wasn't there with him. There were no one else out this far, and every other person, as scarce as they were were all loitering around the edge of the lake. Besides, his legs were starting to hurt as well.
So he took off (once again) and started heading back for the shore. He was well into the middle of the lake now, feeling something scaley, or tickley brush against his pale skin every now and then as he swam towards the shore. He was panting slightly, the dull ache in his arms and legs escalating with each movement he make. He stopped his movements deciding that a little rest was best until the dull ache passed.
All in all, Dale thought he was doing a really good job of not panicking.
Well … sort of.
It’s kinda funny. He thought he noticed his mind bucket switch off for a few seconds – there were all these things he really should be doing he was sure (like swimming), and instead all he was doing was sorta drifting. He was trying to swim, you know. But for some reason his limbs moved sluggishly.
Dale could feel something tickling at his face, and realised that it was his hair, floating around his face as a breeze presumably blew through the air, causing the water to move, which is generally the way of things. He hadn't noticed before, but then again he was moving before. Wait a sec, he wasnt swimming anymore. He was sinking now rather than swimming. When did that happen?
This sudden realisation finally got Dale out of his shock, a little warning bell kinda going off in his head. So he blinks, and then tries and work out which way was up. He could probably stay there a little while to figure it out, but he sure as hell couldn’t stay forever. Okay. What were his options? Hmm. Stay and drown? No. Go into hysterics? Tempting, but … okay, where's the surface? As said before Dale wasn't sure whether he was up or down he only knew he was drifting. That’s a problem. What if there was something creepy in the water? Like when Rayne had pinched him, Dale's mind had instantly come to the conclusion that there was some creature down there that hd been ready to take a bite out of him. What if there really was something in here ready to eat him? Maybe that's why he'd suddenly felt so tired. What if the thing had paralysed him or something, somehow!
The image that gave Dale was enough to make him want to curl up in a ball with both hands over his mouth until he managed to fight the panic down. Dale has way too much imagination.
And he hates the dark. Dale could feel his lungs compressing, begging for a breath of fresh air. He stopped trying to swim, he wanted to retreat to the top and break the surface for air everytime he went to do it, he remembered his limb's weren't cooperating with his mind. Or vice versa. Things were just getting worse, and this place is just... See, he needed to stop doing this. He was thinking about all the ways things could go wrong. There wasn’t much of any way things could go right.
Yeah, that’s not him, is it? Dale was meant to be the optimist. He couldn’t … shouldn’t just … Right. Sure. Paranoia kicks in. Dale gagged slightly as water began to seep into his mouth, which had parted. Something was wrong. The light’s, wherever they'd been now were gone, and it was cold, and there a pressure on his chest. but he could feel his lungs compressing, begging for a breath of fresh air, he slowed down, his limbs stopped kicking, he stopped trying to swim, he wanted to retreat to the top and break the surface for air everytime he went to do it, he realised he'd forgotten which way was up. He wished his feet could find purchase on something so he could stand, and...
…can’t. Overturn. Keep drifting. Mind's drifting too. Then he hit something solid. Something closes around his chest, and the water moving a little faster and then he thinks that having a little sleepy is nice, so...Everything is going wrong but we're so happy! As she sat on the shore she looked out and saw his look which told her that he couldn’t really hear her or at least that’s what she assumed it meant. Or maybe he meant that he didn’t really care what she did or where she was going. It didn’t worry her too much after all Dale was fun to hang around and all but she wasn’t in the right head space to be making close friends. Mainly because close friends would someday be able to tell when she wasn’t right and that would lead to questions and she really wasn’t sure she wanted to answer any questions her drastic mood swings would bring.
Rayne was a good swimmer and she knew it she had all but grown up in the water she used to scare her mother so much when she swam out farther then anyone else at the beach, or made a game of swimming all the way across a wide lake and back just to prove she could. As she watched Dale in the water stopping a lot as he made his way back to shore she realised that he wasn’t a strong swimmer, and she wondered for a moment if he was alright, maybe she should have picked up on his weaker swimming stroke and not encouraged the game of swimming to the stick.
But had he not been the one to initiate that? Surely he wouldn’t have done so if he wasn’t a very good swimmer right? As she watched she knew she was grasping at straws, and it was as he stopped next that she realised the guy was spent, she could see him struggling to even stay above the water and she had her shirt back off and flung on the ground as he began to sink. Even as she ran into the water she doubted in herself whether she would make it out to him in time. Yes she was a fast swimmer but was she that fast, she dove into the water feeling its iciness more this time after sitting on the shore basking in the glory of the sun.
Even as she swam she couldn’t help thinking that he must be running out of air, he still hadn’t come up, she reached out with stronger stroked pushing herself to the limit trying to get out to him, she had done a lifesaving course before and she knew that this long under water he must have started to take water by now, there was no way he could still be holding his breath, especially as exhausted from the swim as she could tell he was before he went under.
It seemed like an eternity as she pulled herself through the water toward the spot she saw him go down but finally she reached it and she dove under eyes open looking for him. Turning this way and that under the water she didn’t see him at first and her panic mounted, this would be just her luck, sneak a guy out of class and then have him drown on her. She started to doubt herself, maybe she was cursed to have everyone around her die, maybe she shouldn’t be around people they might be safer that way.
And as she looked around under the water she made a decision, a plea, ‘let me save him, please, I’ll stay away from people just don’t let another die because of me’ her thoughts went as she searched desperately. Finally she saw him floating suspended in the water looking almost peaceful and she pulled herself toward him kicking with all her might. She felt her fingers close around his arm and she kicked hard off the bottom propelling herself and her passenger with her to the surface.
She didn’t realise she had been running out of air herself until she broke the surface and took a greedy gulp of sweet oxygen. Turning to Dale who was limp in her arms, and while swimming towing him back to shore she held his head above the water. The trip back to the shore seemed to take even longer but really the whole process had been very short from the moment she dove into the water until she towed him to the shore. She hardly noticed as she was pulled out of the water herself by strong arms and Dale taken from her.
Two men passing by had seen the whole thing and rushed over to help just as she had reached the shore, one took Dale and one helped her out of the water, but she wouldn’t be helped, she ran to Dale’s side and started the pump his chest trying to dispel the water he had swallowed and make him breathe.
“Damn it Dale breathe! If you die on me I will kill you!”
She screamed at him in frustration, she barely noticed the group of people that were gathering around them having noticed the commotion as they went about their boring lives, intrigued by a little bit of drama, as some guy they didn’t know but pulled to the shore by some girl they didn’t know watching as she tried to pump life back into him…
